Five of the 17 students of a Mile End elementary school who were turned away on their first day back will be allowed back in, school board officials confirm.
Alain Perron, spokesperson for the Commission Scolaire de Montreal, said they are re-opening one Grade 4 class, which means five of the students who were going to be assigned to other schools can now stay at Lambert-Closse.
The remaining 12 students will be assigned to new schools.
Parents and students held a demonstration outside Lambert-Closse school in the Mile End Monday.
They chanted "CSDM, touche pas à mon école," asking the school board not to touch their school.
Last week, the school turned away 17 students on their first day back.
School officials said declining enrolment had forced them to reduce the number of classes offered at the elementary school.
That meant the 17 students from outside the local district were told they had to transfer to schools in their neighbourhoods.
