It was a very close call for five people in Quebec City, who are recovering after suffering from severe carbon monoxide poisoning Friday morning.

The five victims' lives were saved thanks to rapid intervention from emergency technicians who aired out the home on Faisans Ave in the Charlesbourg neighbourhood.

The carbon monoxide levels in the home were tested at a very dangerous 600 parts per million. An acceptable level is 11 parts per million.

The carbon monoxide poisoning was caused by a car left running unattended in the garage, said Quebec firefighters. There didn't appear to be a carbon monoxide tester in the home.

Some 15 people die in Quebec every year of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Firefighters suggest carbon monoxide detectors should be installed near bedrooms, especially in homes with risk factors such as a fireplace or attached garage.
