The NHL Friday imposed a fine of $ 2,500, the maximum allowed, on Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference of Boston for the obscene gesture he made during the match at the Bell Centre against the Canadiens Thursday.

Ference was punished for offering his gloved middle finger to the Montreal crowd after scoring during the second period of Thursday's game.

The Bruins then won 5-4 in overtime to match the series at 2-2.

Ference apologized after the game and said his finger was stuck in his glove.
