Thousands of racing fans flocked to Ile Notre Dame Thursday morning for a close look at F1 cars, mechanics, and engineers.

The eleven teams racing in the Montreal Grand Prix opened their garages to the public as mechanics worked on cars and drivers met with fans.

For many it's a chance to look for a future career, while others are just in awe of the craftmanship in the the custom vehicles.

One fan was wearing his own bit of custom workmanship: a hat designed to look like a Ferrari race car.

He told CTV Montreal he worked builds a new hat every year to show his devotion to the Italian company.

"I've got about 120 hours on this one," he said.

"I started at the end of February and I finished putting the last paint on it two weeks ago."

On Friday drivers will have two opportunities to make practice laps around the course, while the races themselves take place on Saturday and Sunday.
