Three English schools in St. Laurent are holding public hearings Tuesday night as the English Montreal school board considers boundary changes and adjustments to the curriculum.

With a population of just 117 students and a declining enrollment, Cedarcrest School is in a tough situation.

To avoid having to eventually close the school, the EMSB is considering transferring students from Gardenview School and Parkdale School to Cedarcrest.

A popular choice among parents because of its accelerated French immersion program, Gardenview is bursting at the seams with 834 students. In the next five years, the school is expected to attract another 150 students.

A long-range planning committee has proposed changing school boundaries and sending would-be Gardenview students to Cedarcrest in the coming school year.

Cedarcrest would then be rebranded as a French immersion school. Currently, it is an English core school and only offers 90 minutes of French per day.

Parkdale School, which has 330 students, would send all of its French immersion students to Cedarcrest and become an English core school - eliminating its early French immersion stream.

Parents will give their input to school officials at the public hearings and EMSB commissioners will make a decision in January.
