Emergency sirens will be tested Thursday afternoon in Montreal.

This year nine companies that use hazardous materials will be testing their emergency sirens.

Each siren blast will last three minutes, with the tone rising and falling during that time.

Thursday's tests are taking place between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The companies are:

  • Atlantic Fisheries (Division Metro Richelieu) at 9200 Dubuisson Ave.
  • Merit Beef (Boeuf Merité), (Division Metro Richelieu), at 11701 Albert Hudon Blvd.
  • Indorama PTA Montreal at 10200 Sherbrooke St. East.
  • Suncor (sulphur processing plant) at 11450 Cherrier St.
  • Molson Coors at 1550 Notre-Dame Blvd. E.
  • Labatt Brewery at 50 Labatt St.
  • Saputo inc. at 6869 Metropolitain E. Blvd.
  • Saputo inc at 2365 Cote de Liesse Rd.
  • Parmalat Canada at 7470 Saint Jacques

In the event of an actual emergency toxic clouds of gas would be released into the air near one of these factories.

People in the area who hear sirens should:

  • immediately take shelter in the nearest building
  • close all windows and doors, and turn off ventilation systems
  • turn on a radio to a station that will carry emergency notices
  • avoid using telephones so as not to overload lines
  • leave children at school in order to minimize exposure to toxic substances

When the hazardous material has cleared, the siren will blast for 60 seconds.
