MONTREAL - There are concerns over the structural integrity of the underground parking garage at Dorchester Square in downtown Montreal, but it was not closed to cars Tuesday.
A city spokesperson had told CTV earlier Tuesday that the parking garage was closed because of fears the roof may collapse, but it was later learned that was not the case.
However, the street that runs between Peel and Metcalfe Sts., just south of Ste-Catherine St., is closed to traffic Tuesday and will remain so until further notice as further inspections of the parking garage's roof are required to ensure it is structurally sound.
That street lines the north end of Dorchester Square and is often used for parking by tour buses.
A routine inspection showed signs of weakness to a block of cement in the roof of the underground parking garage, and city officials want to ensure that the roof can bear the weight of traffic overhead.
The city says there is no risk of the roof collapsing at this time, but will wait for the engineer's recommendations before opening the street to traffic.
