MONTREAL -

Animal authorities seized 64 dogs Friday from a puppy mill located east of Montreal.

The identity and location of the puppy mill was not immediately disclosed due to legal reasons, but the dog rescue team said it's a place that stood out.

"It's not the biggest puppy mill we have ever gone into, but it is one of the worst," said Rebecca Aldworth, Executive Director of the Humane Society International Canada.

The dogs came in all shapes and sizes, from puppies to adults, from Chihuahuas to Yorkshire Terriers.

The Humane Society International Canada, along with Quebec Agriculture Ministry officials, seized the pooches following a provincial investigation.

The dogs were living in cramped, dirty cages.

"This is a facility that had multiple dogs crammed in wires cages the animals were clearly not receiving enough food or water," said Aldworth.

"Both the puppies and their mothers and the other dogs were in need they were removed for a reason from this facility," she said.

They were brought to a facility in Lachute where they will be nursed back to health.

Their first steps back to better conditions made for a happy moment for the dog rescuers.

"They got food and water, real good food and water. It's just so great to see them wagging their tails and see them interacting with us," she said.

Authorities are trying to decide whether charges will be laid against the puppy mill in question.

The dogs will be put up for rescue soon.
