A man has died after a fire broke out in Montreal high rise.

Firefighters rushed to Papineau Ave. near Sherbrooke St. when the fire started at 5:25 a.m.

They discovered an unconscious man in the 28th-floor apartment while putting out the flames and dealing with the smoke. They were unable to revive him and his death was declared at the scene.

An autopsy will be needed to determine the cause of death of the man, and to confirm his identity. Police believe the victim of the fire is 67 years old.

The preliminary determination is that the fire started when a cigarette was thrown in a garbage can.
