One of the black bears at the Ecomuseum in the West Island has died.

Homer was 22 years old and had been in poor shape for some time, suffering from arthritis and several other problems.

Zookeepers decided to have her euthanized because medication was no longer enough to control her pain. She will also be cremated, since the Ecomuseum does not have burial facilities.

Homer was known for her hefty appetite, being playful and an animal that was much admired by visitors.

Her mother, Suzie, is still alive at age 25, as is her littermate Marge.

Emilie Senecal of the Ecomuseum said the zoo would create a memorial plaque in Homer's honour.

In the wild black bears normally live for ten to 12 years.
