Montreal lawyer Peter Kirby's debut novel is a murder mystery set in the city he loves.

"The Dead of Winter" is the story of the homeless as seen through the eyes of Detective Inspector Luc Vanier.

Kirby came up with the idea for the character in the dead of winter.

"When I first started to draft, it was-- I was spending Christmas Eve alone," said Kirby.

"This is not a good thing for your mental health, and I thought, well, misery loves company, and I started to write, and this character Luc Vanier came into being, and I sent him out into the night on Christmas Eve," said Kirby.
