Nearly 3,000 young women from six private schools hiked to the top of Mount Royal Thursday as part of the "Girls for a Cure" fundraiser.

Teachers like Dale King say the walk is one way to build a sense of accomplishment in their students.

"It's important that schools and the students and raise money this way and keep the awareness alive. because if we're ever going to beat this disease, it's these young people that are going to do it for us," said King.

Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau, eTalk host, joined the teenagers as they marched to the peak.

"It's about fighting together, holding hands together as women and putting forward values like compassion, integrity, courage and humility," said Gregoire-Trudeau

After 14 years, students from Sacred Heart, Trafalgar, The Study, Villa Maria, Queen of Angels and Miss Edgar's have collected more than $2 million for the St. Mary's hospital foundation.
