Tourism Montreal is looking to attract big events to the city for its 375th anniversary celebrations in 2017.

Officials say with five years to go, they are working on many ideas that they hope will be profitable.

Conventioneers have already convinced one large group to choose Montreal in 2017: The World Police and Fire Games will be held in Montreal.

"It was very profitable for New York. It was profitable in the last four or five years when they've held this event and it will be in Montreal," said Jacques Parisien, chairman of the board of Tourism Montreal.

"We're talking about 50 to 60 thousand visitors who will visit Montreal for one week and stay another week visiting the rest of the province and the regions."

The Games take place every two years and attract thousands of competitors.

The city says it has asked the provincial and federal governments to join Montreal in investing in the celebrations.
