A woman in Dollard des Ormeaux says she was robbed during an open house, with thieves making off with $20,000 in goods after a recent Sunday showing.

Dimitra Xiromeriti has opened her door to a lot of strangers lately, but she didn't bargain that putting her house on the market would cost her so much.

"It was going really well until the last open house I had on November 2. I was robbed," said Xiromeriti.

Her agent alerted her to an open drawer in the jewelry box in her bedroom and when going through her drawers she discovered many items were missing, including jewelry, a Louis Vuitton purse, and Bombardier shares she kept in her bedside drawer.

"I've been living in this house 30 years. I have an alarm. Every time I go out of the house I put the alarm on," said Xiromeriti.

She's filed a police report but doesn't believe she'll recover her belongings. Still she wants to warn others of this crime, and said she will never have an open house again.

"That day I should have stayed home and not leave, and followed everyone and be sure nobody goes inside my drawers, my personal furniture and steal things," she said.

These types of crimes are highly uncommon according to police but they say there are things home owners can do to protect themselves, such as ensuring no valuable items are on display.

Real estate companies are also taking note, and are telling agents to be on the lookout for those who may be looking to loot a home instead of buying one.
