Montreal police suspect two homicides are connected as part of a violent crime spree throughout greater Montreal overnight.

Montreal police say they believe that while the victims are not linked to each other, there is a link between two crimes.

One of the incidents took place 11 p.m. Sunday at a gas station at the intersection of Jean Baptiste Blvd. and Sherbrooke St. in Pointe aux Trembles.

Police allege a 21-year-old man named Frederick Gingras approached a 49-year-old woman and shot her, then stole her car.

That woman, apparently at the gas station to pick up her daughter who was working at the Tim Hortons kiosk inside, was taken to hospital where she died overnight of her injuries.

“We think at that moment he wanted to take the vehicle of the victim,” said Montreal police spokesperson Raphael Bergeron.

Gingras then allegedly drove through Pointe aux Trembles before crashing the car at St. Jean Baptiste and Notre Dame.

It appears Gingras then walked up to a residence on Normandie St. and rang the doorbell, then demanded whoever was inside hand over his car keys.

Gingras is accused of shooting the man through the door, then taking his keys and driving off in his car.

That man, 64, was able to call 9-1-1 to report what happened. He was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries which appear to be relatively minor.

Police allegedly chased Gingras from Pointe aux Trembles to the South Shore, at one point stopping the pursuit because Gingras was reportedly driving faster than 160 km/hour through the Lafontaine Tunnel.

Longueuil police then received reports of a car speeding along highways that crashed into a ditch near Highways 10 and 30.

When they arrived at the scene the car was abandoned but police spotted a man and chased him on foot.

Police said they arrested Gingras at the scene, took him into custody and questioned him. He remains in police custody and hasn't appeared in court as of yet. Gingras is known to police.

Witnesses to the attacks were met overnight and questioned on Monday.

Meanwhile police have located the body of a second man in Montreal and believe it is tied to the robbery and shootings. Homicide detectives were able to establish that link later on Monday afternoon.

That victim, a man in his 20s, was found in a residence near 1st Ave. and Ste. Catherine St. in Pointe aux Trembles.
