A 31-year-old mother of two has died following an attack in Saint Hyacinthe. Police believe Isabelle Lavoie was the victim of a domestic homicide.

A man remains in critical condition following Lavoie’s death, and police say he is their main suspect.

“The investigation is not finished but we're not searching for a suspect. As soon as the injured man (is able) we will meet him but at this moment the life of this person is in danger,” said Surete du Quebec Sgt. Claude Denis.

Officers arrived at the sixplex on Seigneurs St. West in Saint Hyacinthe at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a call that someone had broken into the home.

"The glass of the back door was broken, so police they went immediately inside and they found two adults, two persons, in critical condition," said Denis.

Both people were rushed to hospital where the woman died of her injuries.

According to the SQ, Lavoie had recently broken up with her boyfriend.

Neighbours said the couple was known to fight. The suspect was seen by neighbours driving by Lavoie’s home after the two broke up a month ago.

“I saw him drive by two or three times last week,” said neighbour Rosaire Vincent, who added that the woman ran a home daycare.

“She was always looking after five or six kids,” said Vincent.

The woman’s two children were not present at the time of the attack.

Denis would not say what kind of weapon was used in the attack and would not say if the incident was a murder followed by an attempted suicide.

Police are investigating.
