Strong winds ripped the roof of a Montreal apartment building Monday evening.

Around 7 p.m. the gusts lifted the roof of the 20-unit Beaudry St. building and dumped it in the street.

Witnesses were shocked but nobody was hurt by the incident.

Firefighters worked for several hours to demolish the roof and clear the downtown street and to inspect the building.

"There's no damage inside the building. There's no structural problems in the building. It's raining tonight so there's going to be some water inside for sure," said firefighter Jean Leblanc.

Residents were able to stay in their homes overnight.

Meanwhile 67,000 homes and businesses lost power overnight when the winds knocked down trees and power lines.

Hydro Quebec said most of the failures were in the Laurentians, with 12,000 losses in the Lower St. Lawrence and a few hundred outages in Montreal.

As of 9 a.m. Tuesday more than 49,000 customers were still without electricity.

By 11 a.m. there were 39,127 households and businesses without power.
