Cherrier St. westbound will be permanently closed to motorists at Sherbrooke St. next month for safety reasons.

At a special Plateau Mont-Royal borough meeting Tuesday, it was decided cars will be banned from using the westbound access to Cherrier by the end of August.

Buses, emergency vehicles and bicycles will continue to be permitted.

The borough based its decision on a report issued by Montreal’s public health department.

“We made a change without closing it, but that didn’t work. We had two other serious accidents, we’re taking about broken hips and skulls and face diving and so we decided enough is enough, we have to close it,” said Borough Mayor Luc Ferrandez.

In a report last month, the Journal de Montreal found that the triangle formed by Sherbrooke, Cherrier and Parc Lafontaine Ave. was the site of 94 injuries from 2005 to 2014.

The data collected by the regional health board showed that southwest access to Parc La Fontaine was the most dangerous area.
