A street in the town of Montreal East was closed after a water main broke early Thursday morning.

Around 2 a.m. water flooded Marien Ave. between Dorchester St. and Lagauchetiere St., although there are no reports that any homes on the block are flooded.

Some residents said they were woken up when the leak was spotted by police going door-to-door warning people to move their cars.

Crews were able to turn off the flow to the pipe several hours after it began leaking, and around 8 a.m. started digging in the street to find out where the water was coming from.

Melinda Tessier, who lives on the street, said she had no notification that work was about to begin.

"They never warned us, they never rang and said there's no more water," said Tessier. "Usually the landlord would tell us but the landlord doesn't live in our block."

Shortly after 11 a.m. the leak had been repaired and water pressure was restored to the dozen houses on the street.
