MONTREAL - A spectacular water main break sent water shooting into the air in Montreal's Riviere des Prairies borough Monday evening.

The large pipe located on Gouin Blvd. near Armand Chaput Ave. fractured around 11 p.m., shooting a geyser several metres into the air.

The fountain came down on a home, but it's not known if it caused any damage to the building.

City workers, along with firefighters, police officers, and Hydro Quebec workers were on hand throughout the night to turn off the water, repair damage, and handle traffic in the area.

Montreal's water mains were neglected for decades, and several years ago the city began a project to replace and repair water mains throughout the entire city.

It's estimated that 40 percent of drinking water treated by the city leaks from faulty water mains.
