A young girl and her grandmother were killed and another was seriously injured in a fire in Montreal North on Sunday morning.

At 8:20 a.m., the fire department received a call about the blaze in an apartment building on 49th St., close to Pie-IX and Grandes-Prairies.

Neighbour Maureen Cleroux said she saw smoke billowing ou the windows.

Despite firefighters performing CPR, the two were declared dead at the scene. The girl's mother was at work at the time of the fire.

A man was rushed to hospital and the fire department said he is fighting for his life.

A spokesperson for the fire department said while there was a smoke detector in the apartment, they didn't hear anything when they arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and the arson squad will be investigating.

"There's nothing that leads us to believe it was arson but we're going to investigate in the next few days to determine what happened," said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.

A separate fire in a Cote-Des-Neiges apartment building has left 30 people homeless.

The fire started at around 1:00 a.m. and rapidly spread throughout the four-story building, located at 3010 Barclay Ave.

The Red Cross is helping the evacuated families.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
