A three-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after overdosing on the so-called 'date rape' drug GHB.

The toddler was rushed to the CHUL hospital in Ste. Foy while having difficulty breathing.

Overnight the boy's condition improved and he is no longer in danger, but doctors cannot say if he will have a relapse.

The incident began around 6 p.m. Sunday in the Quebec City suburb of Val-Belair, when the boy apparently stumbled across the drug and ingested it.

Lieutenant Pascal Degrasse of Quebec City police said the boy's aunt has been arrested and will likely face charges of criminal negligence and drug possession.

His father could also face charges.

Police are still determining exactly how the boy discovered the substance.

GHB, gamma-hydroxybutryic acid, can be used to treat narcolepsy and alcoholism, but is frequently used to increase the effects of alcohol, including producing a coma-like sleep.
