MONTREAL - A thunderstorm watch and wind warning were issued for the Montreal area and many other parts of Quebec Saturday as a storm battered parts of Quebec, leaving tens of thousands without electricity.

High winds knocked branches off trees in several parts of town Saturday, including near Monkland in NDG, but the brunt of the storm, as of the mid-afternoon,was being felt mainly in areas north and west of the island.

Hydro Quebec reported that 77,000 Quebecers had lost their power, 24,000 of them being on Montreal Island.

Most of the other outages occured in the Monteregie area.

It's was not yet known if winds reached the 90 km/h speeds predicted by forecasters, or whether 50 millimeters of rain fell in the storm, also as predicted.

The watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. for the Montreal area, the Laurentians, the Outaouais, Central Quebec and the Mauricie.
