A 33-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with killing a 79-year-old Montreal woman.

Steven Harley Pinnell was arrested Tuesday in Ontario while driving a stolen Chevy Silverado.

Police believe Pinnell stole the truck near North Bay, Ont. last week, then came to Montreal on the weekend.

Montreal police say they believe he was driving the pick-up truck that struck Zelia Ponte Araujo on St-Urbain St. and Mont-Royal Ave. in the Plateau.

Ontario Provincial Police spotted the stolen pickup on Tuesady and arrested the driver for possession of a stolen vehicle. He was charged in Ontario with six counts including breach of probation, careless driving, and driving without a valid licence.

A warrant for Pinnell was filed at the Montreal courthouse Wednesday accusing Pinnell of hit and run causing death, stealing a vehicle, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Montreal police said Pinnell is well known to police.

The Chevrolet Silverado will be transported from North Bay to Montreal, a distance of about 550 kilometres, so that investigators can conduct their analysis as evidence in the case.
