The man police believe is responsible for striking and killing a 79-year-old woman in a stolen pick-up appeared in the Montreal courthouse Friday afternoon.

Steven Harley Pinnell (alias Steven Harvey) was brought to Montreal Thursday night and was questoned by Montreal police.

The 33-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie appeared in court Friday to be charged in person with hit-and-run causing death, auto theft and possessing stolen goods. He had already been charged in Ontario with vehicle theft and possession of a vehicle for the purpose of resale. Additional charges may also be filed.

Pinnell will appear in court Monday for a bail hearing.

The hit-and-run charge comes on the same day as the funeral for Zelia Ponte Araujo.

Held at the Santa Cruz Portuguese Church on St-Urbain St. very close to where she was struck, the church was packed with those who wanted to pay their respects.

No surprise, said her son Jim Araujo, who described his mother as a very social and outgoing woman.

"My mother genuinely cared about a lot of people. With all the people that showed up, it’s amazing that so many people cared about her as well, because she really cared about people as well. She loved meeting people and talking to people. That was her happiness,” he said.

Her other son, Robert, said the charges against the suspect are of little comfort.

"It's not going to bring my mother back but it makes me feel better to know he can't be out there and he can't be maybe hurting someone else commiting other crimes," said Robert.

Ponte Araujo was mowed down as she crossed St-Urbain Blvd. at Mont-Royal Ave. Sunday. The truck, driving south on St-Urbain, did not stop after it hit the woman, instead turning left on Mont-Royal.

Two days later, the O.P.P. stopped the pick-up in North Bay, Ont. and arrested Pinnell.
