Quebecers have trust issues and are less sociable than residents of other provinces, a newly-released Statistics Canada study of social capital suggests.

Quebec came in dead last compared to other provinces in several categories designed to determine how friendly and outgoing Canadians are.

-Quebec led all provinces in the category of people who have no close friends. Eight percent of Quebecers reported to be without a close friend, four times the rate of Prince Edward Island. Just two thirds of Quebecers said that they had three or more close friends, the lowest rate in Canada.

-Quebecers took part in fewer monthly group activities than residents of any other province. Just over one third of Quebec seniors over 75 took part in group activities. The province’s 36 percent total for all ages lagged well behind the 55 percent national average.

-When asked if most people can be trusted, only 36 percent of Quebecers replied in the affirmative, as opposed to 63 percent in both B.C. and P.E.I.  Quebec seniors aged over 75 also had the lowest level of trust in their neighbours and strangers.

-When asked whether they believed a neighbour would return their lost wallet, Quebec once again scored lowest as only 42 percent of Quebec residents believed that they would, well below Newfoundland and Labrador which led with 63 percent.
