Student group ASSE has a day of protests planned, taking aim at the Liberal government over its proposed austerity measures.

A small group began the day of demonstrations around 6 a.m. Wednesday at the corner of President Kennedy Ave. and Bleury St.

Montreal police dressed in riot gear arrived at the scene of the protest not long after and are monitoring the situation.

According to a news release, the group takes issue with the “portrait of the public finances” the Liberal government is presenting to Quebecers, saying their “alarmist discourse seeks to create a climate of fear they will use to justify more sacrifices on the part of Quebec’s citizens.”

The group has two more protests planned. The first is slated to begin around 3 p.m. at the corner of Mansfield and de la Gauchetiere Sts.

The day’s final demonstration will start at 8:45 p.m. at Berri-UQAM metro station.
