The jury deliberating the fate of Richard Henry Bain returned to court on Monday to spend a tenth day of pondering the evidence.

Over the weekend the jury met to discuss the case and review the evidence without making any demand of the court.

Last week they had asked for a second computer to speed up their examination of the evidence, a working printer, and for a bailiff to call their families and tell them not to worry.

The request for a printer was denied, but the other requests were granted.

On Monday, defence attorney Alan Guttman spoke to the media, telling them about the current mental condition of his client.

"I spoke to him on Friday. He's doing very well. He's on these heavy anti-psychotics, and they sort of dull his senses and make him very tired, so he's sleeping most of the time," he said.

Bain faces a first degree murder charge for the death of Denis Blanchette, who Bain shot and killed on Sept. 4, 2012.

Guttman says there is no doubt about the facts of the case, but only whether or not Bain was mentally competent the night of the attack.

"The proof against Mr. Bain, it's an open and shut book. He shot the man, he killed him. There has to be some doubt there whether he's criminally responsible or not," said Guttman.

Guttman argued in court that Bain was not of sound mind during the attack and in the days leading up to it.

The Crown believes that Bain planned to kill as many separatists as he could in an assault on the club where Pauline Marois was celebrating her election as Premier of Quebec.

Lengthy deliberations are not unusual when defendants argue they were not of sound mind.

The jury deciding Guy Turcotte's fate deliberated for seven days before rendering a guilty verdict, while Luka Magnotta's jury sat for eight days before finding him guilty of killing Lin Jun.

If the jury rejects finding Bain not criminally responsible, they will have to decide if he is guilty of the first or second degree murder or manslaughter of Blanchette, and of the attempted murders of Dave Courage, the second stagehand who was shot, and the attempted murder of a police officer who arrested Bain, and the attempted murder of everyone else in the nightclub.
