Police say speeding, and possibly alcohol, are responsible for a deadly crash Friday morning in Les Cedres, west of Montreal.

A 20-year-old woman was killed and her 22-year-old passenger seriously injured when a car went off the road and smashed into a house.

Nobody inside the house was hurt but Helen Michaud says it was plain luck that she and her husband escaped being hit by flying debris.

Michaud was watching TV with her husband when she decided to go to bed.

She said her husband "laid down on the couch and that's when it happened. The wheel of the car just came flying through the window," and hit the couple's television.

One of the pillars holding up their house's front porch balcony was smashed into splinters.

Neighbours woken by crash

The young driver is believed to have been speeding along the winding Fleuve road at 1:30 in the morning when her car hit a boat trailer, smashed into a school bus parked in a driveway, then rolled into the front of Michaud's house.

Antoine Paquin was woken by the sound of the impact.

"It was the noise of the bus falling on the side because of the car," said Paquin.

He ran outside to find the 20-year-old driver, trapped beneath the wreckage, was already dead.

A 22-year-old man was writhing in pain in the passenger seat.

Police blame speed

The speed limit along the riverside road is 50 km/h, and there is a stop sign just metres from the crash site.

Michaud said many drivers ignore the sign.

"They should put up speed bumps, more than one," said Michaud.

In October 2008, Anee Khudaverdian was hit and killed on this same road while out with her dog.

The driver was found guilty of drunk driving causing death. At the time of the crash, he was going 140 km/hr.

Police are waiting for an autopsy to determine if the woman who died had been drinking.
