Police say a teenaged girl was sexually assaulted near a soccer field in Greenfield Park this week.

Some nearby softball players in Rene-Veillet Park heard a girl's screams.

“We turned around to see what was happening and we walked towards the bathroom. As soon as we did that we saw a middle-aged white man come running out of the bathroom pulling his pants up,” said Kyle Justin Boutler, who was playing softball.

The players jumped to action, chasing down the suspect, who was later arrested by police.

Boutler said a girl then ran out of the washroom. They stopped their game to ensure she was alright.

“The suspect touched the genitals of the victim over her clothes,” said Longueuil police spokesperson Stephanie Jalbert. “The victim is a teenaged girl. The suspect is a man age in 30s and he has been arrested.”

Mike Doonan was the first to go after the suspect.

“The only thing that went through my head was jumping over the fence and going after him and stopping him until more people arrived,” he said. “I just kind of grabbed him, turned him, put him against the car. By that time, 20 other people were right behind me.”

The incident took place in the park during a girls' soccer game. The Greenfield Park Soccer Club issued a statement on Facebook, telling parents to stay vigilant, but officials wouldn't comment to CTV on the matter.

Police are calling it an isolated incident, but parent Amanda Kendrick said she is worried for the safety of their children.

“I find it's so easy to get complacent. You think your neighbourhood is safe,” she said. “I would question, Do I let her go to the bathroom by herself? Can she go out of sight for more than two seconds?”

The softball players say it's a safe area, and say they’re shocked this happened.

“I have a little sister, we all have little sisters, and we wouldn't want that to happen to anyone,” said Doonan.

Longueuil city councillors plan to thank the good Samaritans at their next softball game on Wednesday.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.
