Spectators who took to the Jacques Cartier Bridge to watch Wednesday night’s fireworks display may have noticed some extra security.

Large trucks were placed on at the entrance of the bridge to block any vehicular access.

Surete du Quebec spokesperson Capt. Guy Lapointe stressed that the added security was not based around any specific threat. He said that while the trucks likely wouldn’t have stopped an attack like that in Nice, France, given recent events, police found it prudent to ramp up security.

“The very most important thing to specify now is there is no imminent or specific threat,” he said. “As a police force, it is our role to keep an eye on what’s going on, be it in Quebec or around the world.”

Lapointe encouraged citizens to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behaviour to authorities.
