It’s a rare thing indeed when a clinic opens its doors to those in need of a family physician.

But Marie-France Lettre and others stumbled onto such a place at the Victoria Square Medical Center at 413 St. Jacques, Suite 140.

Lettre needed a family doctor in Montreal after moving from the Ottawa region last year.

“I kept my doctor in the Outaouais, which meant driving two hours to get a prescription filled. Now with the good news - around the corner, literally, from my office - it's going to be a nice change,” she told CTV Montreal Friday.

The lineups have been lengthy at the clinic, which actually realized that it needed to downgrade some of its furniture, as potential patients had assumed that the nice-looking facility was for private patients only but indeed anybody with a Medicare card can get free service.

The clinic received so many calls on Friday that their phone system crashed, according to an employee.

The clinic – which is operating while undergoing renovations for a major renovations - is closed on weekends.
