Philippe Roy will officially take over from Vera Danyluk as the mayor of the Town of Mount Royal.

Danyluk's time as mayor after four mandates at the head of the city came to an end on July 26 as she battled an undisclosed illness, and Roy took over at that time as interim mayor while awaiting a byelection.

However, Roy was the only candidate to submit his name before the close of the nomination period Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

Roy's former council seat will be subject to a byelection on Nov. 7 with two candidates in the running, Daniel Robert of the Action Mont-Royal party and Marc Debargis, an independent candidate.

Roy said he intends to honour as mayor the values and principles he shared with Danyluk, with whom he worked on council the past five years.

Danyluk was originally hospitalized April 11 and the announcement she would be stepping down came June 3. She officially remained in office until July 26, at which point she was in violation of provincial law that states a mayor cannot be absent from city council meetings for 90 consecutive days.

Danyluk, 66, started suffered from dizziness and fatigue in April, and she lost weight following the death of her mother last year.

"She will be very sorely missed and the rest of the members of council have been picking up the ball and trying to make sure everything carries on as well as possible," Councillor John Miller said in June.

Danyluk first served as mayor of TMR from 1987 to 1994, including a stint as the head of the Montreal Urban Community.

She was re-elected as mayor in 2005, and most recently ran and won another term as mayor last year.
