The Marcelin-Wilson Arena in Ahuntsic has been shut down, because of a broken refrigeration system.

It will take at least eight weeks to carry out repairs at the facility on de l'Acadie Blvd., which means the rink will be closed for the rest of the season.

People in the community say the closure is disappointing for young hockey players and skaters.

"I think they're very affected, because they're ready to play and they arrive at the rink and the rink is closed," said hockey coach Danny Disei.

Hockey teams that normally practice at the 38-year-old arena have started to hit the ice at neighbouring rinks, but that hasn't solved the problem entirely.

"Everybody's fighting to get ice time," said Jean-Francois Dougas, the father of a young hockey player.

The majority of Montreal's 41 indoor skating rinks are more than 25 years old. Thirty-four of the rinks need $150 million in repairs and upgrades.

The Doug Harvey Arena in NDG is one of 15 arenas slated to receive a new refrigeration system.

Daniel Drolet, vice president of NDG Hockey, said he thinks the city should act quickly to fix its aging rinks.

"We've got to find a way or some funds somewhere to put money into the arenas because you're hurting the kids."
