Conservative candidate Bernard Genereux has been officially declared elected in the Quebec riding of Montmagny-L'Islet-Kamouraska-Riviere-du-Loup riding, after a judicial recount.
The original tally on Oct. 19 showed Genereux ahead of Liberal candidate Marie-Josee Normand by 269 votes.
Following the recount, Elections Canada declared Genereux the winner by 272 votes.
The Conservative candidate received 14,274 votes in total, while Normand came in second with 14,002 votes.
According to Elections Canada rules, judicial recounts are mandatory if two candidates receive the same amount of votes, or if the difference between two candidates' totals is less than one thousandth of the total votes cast.
Any electors, including candidates, can also request a recount.
Following the Oct. 19 general election, recounts were also ordered in the Ontario riding of Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte, and in Edmonton Mill Woods, where Liberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi was declared the winner on Oct. 29.
This year's election wasn't the first tight race in Montmagny-L'Islet-Kamouraska-Riviere-du-Loup.
Elections Canada also ordered a recount in the riding in 2011, when the initial count showed NDP candidate Francois Lapointe with a narrow five-vote lead over Genereux.
Lapointe officially won the seat ten days later, after that year's recount put him nine votes ahead of his opponent.
