The RCMP conducted several raids Tuesday in and around Montreal in connection with an ongoing investigation into radicalization.

The investigation is believed to be related to an operation last week where officers intercepted 10 young Montrealers suspected of planning to leave the country to join radical groups at Trudeau Airport.

A spokesperson would not confirm exact locations for all the raids, but officers targeted one home in St. Leonard by executing a search warrant. They wouldn’t say what they were looking for.

Two unmarked cars could be seen outside the residence. After two hours, a police officer emerged from the home with a box, put it in the car and left.

It was the second time the RCMP visited the home.

On Viau St. near the first location, another police operation took place involving the RCMP. Officers and investigators also left with items seized from the home.

Earlier this month, the RCMP questioned and released 10 youths, including minors, suspected of wanting to join Islamic State fighters in the Middle East.

No charges have been laid, but the investigation is ongoing. The youths have had their passports confiscated.

The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team said it arrested the teenagers at Trudeau Airport last Friday. They were released the following weekend.

The RCMP was tight-lipped about Tuesday's raids but confirmed several were happening in the Montreal area in connection to an ongoing investigation. They would not confirm it was tied to the recent arrests.

Teens can turn to terrorism

Some teens turn to terrorism groups like ISIS for many different reasons, explained Ratna Ghosh, a McGill University education professor studying radicalization.

“There are factors that push them. Could be alienation, marginalization, a loss of self. Some people are seeking something – a meaning in life,” she said, adding that once teens are radicalized, they can still be saved.

“Right around the world these deradicalization programs have been very successful in bringing them back to mainstream society if they have been radicalized,” she said.
