As Quebecers celebrated the Fete Nationale, politicians taking part in the parade and other events had a lot to say about the UK referendum results and what it means for Quebec.

With the Leave side winning by more than one million votes, Parti Quebecois MNAs are wondering what impact it will have on Scotland.

Veronique Hivon, one of several candidates for the PQ leadership, hoped it would give strength to the separatist movement.

"We will be following closely also what it means for the Scottish people. To see again such a difference in the outcome, and if that will bring again the independence movement more strength" said Hivon.

While the majority of regions in England voted to leave the EU, the majority of Scotland voted to remain part of the union.

Jean-Francois Lisée, also a PQ leadership candidate, said he would have voted with the EU.

"Had I been in Britain I would have voted to remain because I think there was more to gain from being in the union than not. But it's a sovereign country who decides freely the amount of sovereignty it wants to share," said Lisée.

Others agree that Brexit isn't comparable to the Quebec sovereignty movement.

"It's very complex," said Quebec Solidaire leader Francoise David.

"I don't want to make parallels but one thing, it was a democratic vote. We have to respect it. "

The global impact of the vote is still unknown but Premier Philippe Couillard, speaking at a museum opening in Quebec City, reassured citizens.

"La Caisse de Depot has told us that all precautions have been taken in order to protect the value of its investments," Couillard said.

Speaking at the same event, prime minister Justin Trudeau was booed briefly for speaking in English as he shared Canada's position on the Brexit results.

"We respect the choice of the British people and we will remain a strong partner of the UK and the European Union. Our shared histories and common values make us natural trading partners and we will continue to work with both of them as we move forward with this new decision," said Trudeau.
