The province of Quebec will soon have its own long-gun registry.

As the current parliamentary session wound down before summer, the National Assembly voted in favour of Bill 64 on Thursday.

The bill, first filed in December, has been the subject of opposition in rural areas, where many of the province’s hunters live.  It passed with 99 votes in favour, with eight opposed and no abstentions.

The opposition came from the Coalition Avenir Quebec, of whom seven MNAs voted against it. Sylvie Roy, a former Parti Quebecois member currently sitting as an independent for the riding of Arthabaska, was the eighth opposing vote.
