Quebec will be well-represented at the Academy Awards next month.

Multiple filmmakers from Montreal are up for awards at the annual movie showcase.

Denis Villeneuve's film "Arrival" earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The science fiction story about the arrival of extra-terrestrial aliens was filmed in Quebec with American stars.

Villeneuve said he will be joined by lots of Quebec talent when he walks the red carpet, including Patrice Vermette, Paul Hotte, Bernard Gareipy Strobl, Claude LaHaye, Sylvain Bellemare, and Shawn Levy.

Villeneuve is currently finishing Blade Runner 2049 with Ryan Gosling, who has his own stack of nominations for "La La Land" to cope with.

"I had a phone call with Ryan Gosling. We wanted to congratulate each other as friends, and the good news that we will see each other again. Because on the side he is very busy doing press for 'La La Land.' He is in China right now. And me I am glued to my screens in the editing room," said Villeneuve.

"It's just joy for us because we are proud of each other as friends."

Villeneuve's movie "Incendies" was nominated in the best foreign-language category in 2011.

Montreal animator Theodore Ushev is also heading to Hollywood.

His NFB-produced short film "Blind Vaysha" is one of three Canadian short films nominated.

Talking to the Canadian Press, Ushev said he felt weak, then he cried, laughed, and cried some more when he heard his name Tuesday morning.

Other Canadian short films nominated in his category are "Pear Cider and Cigarettes," and "Piper."

Meanwhile Xavier Dolan was passed over.

His movie "It's Only the End of the World" was the Canadian selection for best foreign-language film, but did not receive an Oscar nomination.
