The Quebec government announced it is planning to make it tougher to collect welfare.
In a press conference Wednesday morning, Minister of Employment Francois Blais explained that the changes are small but symbolic.
One key change is limiting the amount of time welfare recipients can spend outside of Canada. If they don't want to be penalized, they will not be able to leave for more than 15 days a month. In the past, people didn't have to be in the province full time to get their cheque.
There will also be changes to what kind of income they're allowed to earn. For example, any rental income starting from a third roommate or more will have to be declared.
Blais assured that only a small group of welfare recipients are targeted by these changes, and people on welfare due to disabilities will not be affected.
