The Couillard government plans to go ahead with a ban on dangerous dogs this fall.

The proposed legislation would likely place dogs into three categories:

  • dangerous dogs
  • potentially dangerous dogs
  • other dogs

The ‘dangerous dogs’ classification would reportedly include certain breeds and types but it could include a grandfather clause that would allow current owners to keep their pets under a set of conditions.

It's expected that dogs defined as 'dangerous' would have to be sterilized and owners would pay higher registration fees.

Owners would also need to keep their dog on a leash and muzzled when out in public.

Quebec Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux is expected to present a proposal to the Liberal caucus in two weeks before this is formally announced.

In the meantime, Couillard said they're continuing to do their homework by looking around at similar bans before they set anything in stone.
