MONTREAL - Montreal police are warning public transit users to keep an eye on their cell phones and other gadgets.

In the past few months the number of thefts and robberies in the metro system has increased.

To make people aware of the problem, the SPVM is handing out leaflets to commuters at metro stations and bus terminals with advice about staying safe.

The commonsense warnings include:

  • staying in well-lit, high traffic areas
  • not flaunting electronic gadgets
  • being careful when being jostled
  • paying attention to surroundings
  • calling 9-1-1 if you are robbed, or witness a robbery

The warnings are also being broadcast on the Metrovision televisions inside the metro system from April 4 to April 10.

Until 2008 crime in the metro had been dropping, with an overall decrease of 8 percent according to Montreal police.

Figures compiled by The Gazette earlier this year indicate crime figures rose by 10 percent from 2008 to 2010.
