Police handed out 182 tickets at a student protest at the corner of St. Denis and De Maisonneuve Thursday afternoon, almost all of them with an order to pay $640 as ordained by the P-6 bylaw.
The incident began when police warned a group of protesters that their demonstration was in violation of the bylaw which places conditions on protests. They ordered those assembled to disperse. Several left but the 180 who stayed were circled and brought into buses and ticketed.
Two others who had left the initial group were subsequently ticketed, one under the P-6 bylaw and another for CP-1 Article 5, issued for disobeying an order from an officer of the peace, according to Montreal police representative Sgt. Jean Bruno Latour. One protester was arrested on charges of breach of conditions.
Earlier Thursday a group of about 40 demonstrators were forced out of the campus of UQAM after trying to disrupt classes.
About 40 people attended a peaceful counterdemonstration Thursday evening on St. Denis. Those in attendance were expressing their opposition to the demonstrations.
