A pedophile with a long record of sexual assaults could be declared a long-term offender, meaning he could be locked up beyond his regular sentence if needed.

Shaun King pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to sexually assaulting a boy between 1971 and 1974 in Shannon, near Quebec City, when he was a well-known hockey coach in the English community.

It's the latest victim to come forward and denounce King, who has numerous convictions for assaulting young boys, with crimes dating back to the late 1960s. He has spent time in jail numerous times.

Kind was convicted in 1998 for assaulting several more boys while he took advantage of his status as a hockey coach. He was sentenced to seven years in jail for those crimes.

After his release, King moved to Montreal. He was rearrested in 2010, this time for trying to lure several young boys into performing sexual acts with him online.

Police found many files of child pornography on his computer.

The publicity surrounding the case convinced more past victims to come forward, leading to more guilty pleas last year and again Wednesday.

His sentence is still pending.

A psychiatrist must examine King in order for him to be declared a long-term offender.

Earlier assessments have shown that King has a deep-rooted sexual deviancy, that he is not interested in rehabilitation, and that he has no real empathy for his victims.

A psychiatric evaluation will allow the court to gain a better understanding of his mindset.

The long-term offender status would allow the court to keep a very tight leash on King following the end of his next sentence.

“We already have an evaluation made and a psychological report, but today we ask that he meet with a psychiatrist from the Pinel Institute, who will decide on the kind of risk he represents to society and the kind of supervision he requires,” said Crown prosecutor Roxane Laporte.
