MONTREAL - A pedestrian was killed Friday evening at 8:45 p.m. at the corner of St. Laurent and de Castelnau after a car smashed into a lamppost, then hit another vehicle, leading one of the cars to fatally careen into the pedestrian.

The incident began when a 42-year-old man driving a Mazda northbound on the Main skidded off the road and onto the sidewalk, hitting the lamppost on the southeast corner of the intersection.

The car then hit a westbound vehicle waiting at the red light.

The two cars then shifted upon impact and one of, or both of, the vehicles hit the pedestrian, who was near the metro entrance.

Police did not specify the age or gender of the victim, who was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that lost control was uninjured and is being questioned by police.

The 26-year-old man driving the vehicle waiting at the stop sign was brought to hospital for shock, while his 28-year-old passenger was uninjured.
