The owner of a fabled Montreal costume rental store that originated in the 1930s is looking for a successor.

Susan Cohene has owned Malabar Costumes for 20 years. Under her leadership, the store went from 500 costumes in stock to almost 7,000, with Cohene making 90 per cent of them.

“Since I’m a little girl, I always sewed,” she said. “I have five kids, come Halloween, I was not going to buy a plastic costume. I went out and got patterns and every, five of them were dressed in different themes.”

Despite that passion, Cohene finds herself wanting to retire.

“My kids are all married and I have grandchildren and I really want to move on to the next chapter,” she said.

While there aren’t any candidates yet, Cohene is looking for someone with the same passion for costumes she possesses… and a sense of humour doesn’t hurt either.

“You can dress up when you work,” said Cohene. “You meet a lot of interesting people.”
