MONTREAL—A man driving his car in the wrong direction on Highway 40 was killed in a violent head-on collision early Monday morning in Montreal’s east end, sending four others to hospital.

The accident took place just after 3:00 a.m. near Tricentenaire Blvd. While the Surete du Quebec wasn’t sure why the 39-year-old driver was on the wrong side of the highway, investigators were on the scene.

The driver was killed instantly when his car collided with another vehicle. Four people in that car were injured, two seriously. All are expected to make a full recovery.

A baby seat was found in the back of the victim’s car.

While investigators will look at whether alcohol was a factor, or whether the crash was a suicide attempt, the details raise alarm. The driver would have had to drive up an exit ramp. The closest ramp was at Gouin Blvd., nearly 10 kilometres from where the crash happened.

Two people in a third car who stopped to help at the accident scene also needed to be transported to an area-hospital to be treated for shock.

The highway was closed until just after 8:00 a.m.

The SQ is urging caution over Thanksgiving weekend. An SQ officer was killed on Sunday while conducting a roadside operation near the 640 Highway.
