If you've ever been on-line to book a flight- you've likely seen amazing travel deals that evaporate right before your eyes. Especially - once you add up all the 'extras'.

Ottawa is soon going to proceed with regulations requiring all Canadian airlines to include all fees and taxes in their advertised prices.

"Essentially, introducing an all-inclusive airline fare advertising framework," said George Petsikas of the National Airlines Council of Canada.

Until that happens, here are ten ways to find the best deals on airfare.

1. Get on a website like FareCompare
Once you enter your preferred departure dates and times-it automatically brings up the total price for flights with airlines you could' fly on.

2. Be flexible
Many websites will also show you cheaper flights on days or routes around your preferred date, and could save you hundreds of dollars.

3. Shop early, but not too early
The best airfares are usually offered within four months of your flight.

4. If you see a good price, book right away
Really good deals don't often last long and you can bet other travellers will grab those available seats because they're seeing them too.

5. Avoid travelling on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday
It tends to cost more. The cheapest days to travel are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

6. Use technology to track flight fares for you and alert you when airlines discount their flights.
Finding promo codes for airlines or hotels can save you money as well.

7. Use your air miles
Especially when ticket prices are high. And sign up for loyalty programmes that offer cheaper deals for repeat customers.

8. Book a package deal
All-inclusive packages are usually a better deal than a la carte travelling.

9. Travel off-season
You'll get much better deals if you avoid peak travel periods and dates and be much likelier to get "bumped up" if a flight isn't full.

10. Don't rule out using a travel agent
They know routing, best times to fly and the full cost of a flight or travel package, and any other fees or conditions – like blackout times – you may need to know about.
