MONTREAL—A 24-year-old cyclist is in critical condition and fighting for his life after he collided with a minivan in the Plateau late Monday night.

According to witnesses, the cyclist didn’t stop at a red light and wasn’t wearing a helmet as he crossed the intersection at St-Urbain St. and Milton St. The minivan was heading south on St-Urbain St. when the collision took place around 11:45 p.m.

According to Montreal police spokesman Simon Delorme, the cyclist suffered major head injuries in the crash.

An intersection where two major bike paths meet, Quebec's auto safety board recorded only two accidents at the corner between 2006 and 2010.

Police are reminding cyclists to wear helmets, be visible at night and remain courteous.
