MONTREAL—The Parti Quebecois tabled a new bill on Thursday that would boost compensation for crime victims. Parents of a murdered child would get $12,000, compared to the $2,000 they currently get.
The bill would also bring to two years, from the current maximum of one year, the time in which a family may request compensation.
Funeral costs would reimbursed up to $5,000—over the current $3,000. The government would also pay up to $3,200 for cleaning up a crime scene when a victim has died in a private home.
Victims of conjugal violence or sexual assault would get a compensation equivalent to two months of the victims’ rent or up to $1,000 per month. This would be to cover the costs associated with breaking a lease for safety reasons as provided for in the Quebec Civil Code.
